You Need to Experience Christmas (or Any Season) in Prague.
Gothic spires, world-class Christmas markets, and surprisingly well-priced luxury hotels make Prague one of Europe's most enchanting seasonal escapes. Discover the city and its fairy-tale Bohemian day trips.
April 15, 2026
Prague is often called the city of a hundred spires: it earns its nickname the moment you arrive.
Gothic towers, Baroque domes, and ornate rooftops rise in every direction, creating one of the most visually striking cityscapes in Europe. Few moments capture this beauty better than sunrise on Charles Bridge. Soft morning light reveals the city's architectural layers street by street—my personal favorite time to walk the ancient squares, empty before the crowds arrive. I've been exploring Prague and the greater Czech Republic for the last five years, particularly during the festive season, and it remains one of my all-time favorite destinations during Christmas time.
Dominating the skyline is Prague Castle, the largest ancient castle complex in the world. From its elevated position, the castle commands sweeping views over the city and the winding Vltava River below. Within its walls sits St. Vitus Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic design and an essential stop for travelers seeking both history and grandeur.
What Makes Christmas in Prague So Magical? A Prague Winter Travel Guide
While Prague is captivating year-round, it becomes truly enchanting during the Christmas season. The Old Town Christmas Market is widely considered one of the best in Europe. Set against a backdrop of historic facades and crowned by a towering Christmas tree, this Prague Christmas market feels straight out of a storybook. A viewing platform offers a prime vantage point for photographs overlooking the square, while vendors offer everything from roasted treats and mulled wine to handcrafted local goods.
Visitors can explore markets in Prague featuring famed hand-blown glassware and other artisan goods. They can also walk through Old Town Square Prague to witness the medieval astronomical clock, one of the oldest still in operation. As mesmerizing as it is, travelers should remain aware of their surroundings here, as pickpockets are known to target distracted onlookers.
Czech Republic UNESCO Sites: Bohemia Luxury Travel and Day Trips Beyond
Prague also serves as an ideal base for exploring some of the Czech Republic's most remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Kutná Hora
An easy day trip brings you to Kutná Hora, home to three extraordinary historic sites. Decorated entirely with human bones taken from nearby cemeteries, the Sedlec Ossuary is unlike anywhere else in the world. Nearby, the Sedlec Abbey preserves the remains of early Christian martyrs. The Church of Saint Barbara blends Gothic, post-Gothic, and Renaissance styles into a striking architectural whole.
Holašovice and Český Krumlov
Farther south lies Holašovice, a remarkably preserved 18th-century village largely untouched by modern development. Walking its cobblestone paths, past whitewashed farmsteads with South Bohemian Baroque facades, you feel time slow to a standstill. Roosters crow in the distance; laundry drifts on lines strung between barns. Both World War II and the Soviet era passed it by, leaving its original character intact.
The crown jewel of Bohemia's luxury travel, and the most popular Český Krumlov day trip from Prague, is Český Krumlov. What makes Český Krumlov worth the trip? Once the capital of the region, this fairy-tale town is wrapped by a bend in the Vltava River and crowned by a dramatic hilltop castle and palace complex. Its beauty is so compelling that even river cruise lines routinely transport guests more than two hours to experience it in person.
Where to Stay: Prague's Best Luxury Hotels
Prague holds a well-kept secret: its luxury hotels are surprisingly well priced, compared to other major European cities.
For travelers seeking history and character, Alchymist Grand Hotel and Spa offers a distinctive, opulent experience within a former monastery, complete with cellars dating back to the 11th century.
Those seeking refined modern luxury will appreciate the Mandarin Oriental, Prague, tucked within the tranquil Malá Strana district near Prague Castle. The converted Dominican monastery blends centuries of history with serene, contemporary design—its spa alone is worth the stay. The luxury hotel offers a quieter perspective across the river from Old Town, perfect for the intentional slow traveler.
For an iconic stay in the heart of the city, Four Seasons Hotel Prague delivers timeless elegance. Spread across multiple historic buildings along the Vltava, every corner of the property reveals architectural details from the 18th century seamlessly paired with contemporary luxury.
