Horror Stories: How a Travel Agent Should Advocate for You

When a dream Alaskan honeymoon cruise was derailed by weather delays and lost luggage, one travel agent worked through the night to save the trip. A firsthand account of why real advocacy matters.

Travel does not go awry because people plan poorly. The truth is, reality will inevitably intervene.

Even Dream Trips Go Wrong: My Client's Honeymoon Nightmare

Earlier this year, a couple booked their dream honeymoon: a luxury Alaskan cruise. The plan was intentional and well thought out. They would fly to Seattle the day before, enjoy the city and a night in a hotel, and board the cruise ship relaxed and ready. On paper, everything worked.

Then the weather changed. Flight cancellations flickered over the monitors across their airport.

They were rerouted and stranded overnight in Dallas. The earliest flight their airline could offer the following morning would land in Seattle at 1:00 pm. Cruise embarkation closed at 3:00 pm. That margin was too thin to trust.

They made the smart decision to book seats on a different airline arriving at 10:00 am instead. The problem was luggage. Once checked, bags must continue to the final destination. Their luggage was now committed to a flight they were no longer on.

At that point, the trip could easily have unraveled. What they had was a trusted travel agent: me.

Advocacy You can Count On, Even After-Hours

I was traveling that same day, flying to Florida with my five-year-old for a mother-son cruise of our own. My phone buzzed with the first client call late that evening—my son already asleep on my shoulder—and I immediately began working the problem from all angles. The airline's baggage support line placed me 39th in queue. I opted for a callback.

That call came at 4:00 am.

I spent the next hour tracking the bags, confirming routing, and understanding what could and could not be done. The luggage was scheduled to arrive on the 1:00 pm flight. I messaged my clients, fully expecting them to be asleep. They were not.

We agreed they would wait at the airport for the luggage. If it arrived, they would proceed as planned. If it did not, they would board the ship regardless and deal with the inconvenience later.

My role as their travel agent is not just to plan travel. It is to anticipate where itineraries can break and put solutions in motion before disruption becomes irreversible.

That is where experience matters most.

That morning, I built contingencies. I spoke with the airline about rerouting options and contacted the cruise line to understand procedures and permissions. I mapped out how luggage could reach the ship after departure if necessary. Every option was addressed before the outcome was known.

Then the next client call came.

The luggage had not been loaded onto the 1:00 pm flight. The next available flight would arrive after the ship had departed.

My client was understandably upset. I told her exactly what she needed to hear. Board the ship. Take your essentials. Your travel agent is handling the rest—this is what advocacy looks like in action.

The Hard-Fought Fix: That's Why You Use a Travel Agent.

While boarding my own cruise, I was on the phone with the airline locating the bags. While registering my son for the kids club, I was coordinating with the cruise line to authorize transport. By the time I sat down to dinner, I had confirmation.

The luggage had been rerouted to Juneau, the first port of call. Cruise line representatives at the airport would deliver it directly to the ship. By the time my clients returned from their first day ashore, everything would be waiting in their cabin.

When I called to share the news, the relief was immediate. That moment, when tension gives way to ease, is the real value of having a travel advisor.

A luxury travel advisor is not a booking platform. We are advocates when systems—including travel insurance—fail, and problem solvers when timing collapses. Whether it is an Alaskan cruise honeymoon or a complex international itinerary, we understand how airfare, cruise lines, ports, hotel rooms, and policies intersect—and we know how to navigate those systems when plans change.

Could you manage this on your own by booking online? Possibly. But when weighing a travel agent vs booking online, would you want to spend your honeymoon on hold with an airline while your luggage sits in another city and heaven on earth drifts by your balcony? Probably not.

Ready to Experience the Advocacy of a Travel Advisor?

I cannot promise that travel will always go perfectly. No one can. But I can promise that when it does not, you will not be navigating it alone.

Weather delays and flight cancellations. Missed connections. Tight embarkation windows. Medical emergencies. Baggage rules that make no sense until you are standing in an airport watching the clock run down. You'll encounter these issues anywhere in the world, but working with an advisor like myself means you will have a personal advocate and the strength of our entire travel agency behind you.

What to Look for in a Travel Advisor

Not all travel agents offer the same level of support. When choosing an advisor, look for someone who provides 24/7 availability during your trip, has specialist knowledge in your travel type—whether that is a cruise, honeymoon, or luxury resort—and is backed by an agency with established relationships across airlines, cruise lines, and hotels.

This is especially true for complex travel, where policies and timeframes leave little room for error. Booking through me means more than gaining perks, upgrades, and better deals; it means you now have someone on your team who plans for precision and prepares for disruption long before either occurs.

Luxury is not only about the ship or the suite. It is about how supported you feel when plans unravel.

The full advocacy a travel agent offers should not be apparent only at the time of booking. The true value of a travel advisor reveals itself when it matters most.
