Where to Stay in Koh Samui, Thailand: The Best Hotels for Every Type of Trip

Koh Samui's top luxury hotels are not interchangeable. From family-friendly resorts to romantic private villas, here's a firsthand breakdown of the four best properties on the island and who each one is perfect for.

Home to some of the world's best beaches, rich culture, and legendary gastronomic experiences, Koh Samui captures everything you love about Thailand and then some - all on one island.

Where you stay matters, and Koh Samui is not a one-size-fits-all type of destination. I've personally visited the four most talked-about luxury properties on the island, and the right one for you depends entirely on what you're actually looking for when you land.

Koh Samui's luxury hotels are legendary. Infinity pools over the glimmering Gulf of Thailand, private villas and plunge pools tucked into lush hillsides, the kind of jungle resort imagery that makes you want to book a flight tonight. But Koh Samui's top hotels are not interchangeable.

One is built for families who want a full resort experience. One is designed for couples who want to disappear into nature. One is polished and feels custom-built for honeymoons and proposals. And one is, in my opinion, the most special property the island has to offer.

Picking wrong means picking the wrong trip, not just the wrong room.

Here's how the best hotels in Koh Samui break down — and which one is right for your trip.

The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui

The largest resort on the island, The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui boasts 170 rooms and 60 pool villas spread across 58 acres of a former coconut plantation — the scale of it doesn't fully land until you're actually walking between the pools. It's the most amenity-dense of the four, with eight restaurants, a Spa Village with a barber and nail salon, a two-story kids club, mini golf, an arcade, and even a Muay Thai boxing ring on-site.

Ritz-Carlton Koh SamuiAn expansive, open-concept luxury villa living room features warm wood-paneled ceilings and seamlessly opens to a private sun deck, infinity pool, and tropical ocean views.

My honest take? It's the least distinctly "Thai" of the four. With taupe trimmings and modern, clean details throughout its suites, this hotel feels closer to a typical resort you'd find in similar destinations around the world, more polished and manicured than immersed in the island itself. That's not a knock against the resort at all — it's just a different kind of stay. If you want variety, structured activities, and a property built for families with kids of every age, this is the best option.

The Ritz-Carlton is the right choice for guests who want to linger a week or two at a stretch because of the seemingly endless activities and eight on-site restaurants. Loyalty runs deep here — a crew of regulars who return year after year speaks volumes about how comfortable the resort is to settle into.

Best for families, multi-generational trips, and anyone craving the comfort of a familiar luxury experience far from home.

Six Senses Samui

Six Senses is built around sustainability and wellness as a true philosophy, not a marketing line. Guests can visit the property's own farm, feed the animals, learn about composting and sustainable cooking, and even watch old wood repurposed into charcoal right on-site. The sustainability isn't a tour you opt into; it's the texture of the place.

Six Senses SamuiThe clifftop infinity pool and sun-drenched deck at Six Senses Samui cascade down toward the Gulf of Thailand, where lush tropical vegetation frames every sightline — a signature of the resort's philosophy of immersing guests fully within the island's natural landscape.

The villas are glass-walled and built to immerse you in the surrounding jungle, with categories separated by view and private pool tier. Every villa comes with a guest experience maker — a personal butler who checks in on you daily. Two of the 67 villas are two-bedroom units with direct beach access and can be configured as a three-bedroom for larger groups. The spacious villas make this perfect for families, and the on-site farm and daily ice cream hour are a hit with kids. Most guests stay about five days, and the pacing reflects that — unhurried, easy, genuinely restorative. Dining on the Rocks, perched on the headland with sweeping gulf views, is consistently ranked among the best restaurants on the island.

Best for honeymooners and couples after a slower, more immersive wellness retreat — or large families who want serious space and a property that earns its keep with the kids.

Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui

Four Seasons — and honestly, what more needs to be said? This is the easiest call on this entire list. If you're unsure where to stay in Koh Samui, pick this one. You won't be disappointed.

Four Seasons Resort Koh SamuiEvery Four Seasons villa commands an uninterrupted ocean panorama — the kind of view that convinced White Lotus producers to film here.

HBO's The White Lotus (Season 3) catapulted this resort to international fame, but it was well worth the hype long before its Hollywood debut. You'll find the Four Seasons' signature service and amenities, privacy in abundance, and something to entertain for everyone. The property delivers a private beach, a sanctuary spa, five on-site restaurants, a rum-tasting and cigar lounge, and local connections that bring the island right to your villa doorstep.

Tucked into the hillside and deeply embedded in the landscape, this resort weaves Thai culture into every corner. The sprawling wedding pavilion doubles as the teens' club, complete with its own private beach area — a dream venue for newlyweds and fourteen-year-olds alike. Every villa faces the ocean, and residences (up to five bedrooms) come with a dedicated butler and the option for private in-room dining overlooking the gulf.

Settling into this resort, I fell into a rhythm worth stealing: a post-travel recovery day, a full relaxation day, then a half or full-day speedboat trip to the nearby islands. Most guests stay at least three nights, though a week is common if the itinerary allows.

Best for everyone — but if you made me narrow it down: honeymooners, proposals, and couples who want a romantic, ocean-facing villa with a genuinely high level of personal service.

Banyan Tree Samui

This is my personal favorite of the four, but for a specific reason. Banyan Tree sits in a private bay in Lamai, and it has the best private beach, with the clearest, most swimmable water, and the best coral reef of the four. Most villas face sunrise, and despite the privacy it offers, you're genuinely close to everything you'll want to do in Koh Samui: Lamai town is a short trip away if you want to get out and explore, which not every resort on this list can claim.

Banyan Tree SamuiThe iconic curved infinity pool at Banyan Tree Samui cascades through lush tropical landscaping, where emerald umbrellas and sun-drenched loungers line the poolside terrace.

The location makes this one my favorite — I love a resort that feels like a sanctuary but still gives you the option to easily go out and explore. But there are so many other reasons it earns that title. The space. The privacy. The quiet. Most guests stay in their villas enjoying their own private pools, so the property never feels crowded, even with 88 villas on-site.

About 70% of guests are couples and 30% are families, and the property balances both well with a kids' pool and club alongside a private adults-only pool that never feels cordoned off or sterile. The spa leans into hydrotherapy and IV drip treatments, and the full-size fitness center will satisfy any active traveler with views you won't find at any gym back home.

With five on-site restaurants, private destination dining, and in-villa service, there's little need to leave the property until you're ready to explore.

Best for couples who want the most immersive, distinctly Thai experience on the island, with easy access to explore beyond the resort.

The Bottom Line

Koh Samui's best hotels aren't interchangeable — and the wrong match can derail the trip you've been dreaming of. A couple traveling with their adult kids who want adventure but end up at a romantic private retreat surrounded by honeymooners? That's not a bad hotel; that's the wrong hotel.

This is exactly why I do what I do. I've walked these properties, tested the restaurants, spoken with the teams on the ground. When you book through me, you're not just getting a reservation — you're getting a profiled booking, one where the hotel already knows who you are and what matters to you before you ever arrive. Exclusive rates you won't find on any public booking site. Access to hidden inventory and room categories that don't show up online. Industry connections that turn a milestone dinner into a private dining experience — or a honeymoon arrival into champagne already waiting at your villa door. And the concierge support? Complimentary. Because the planning should feel as effortless as the trip itself.

Koh Samui Hotel FAQs

What's the best Koh Samui hotel for honeymoons?

Four Seasons and Banyan Tree both lean heavily into romance, with Four Seasons offering more polish and Banyan Tree offering more privacy and immersion.

What's the best Koh Samui hotel for families?

The Ritz-Carlton, with its extensive kids' programming and resort-style amenities. Six Senses because of the onsite farm that kids (and adults) love.

Which Koh Samui hotel is most private?

Banyan Tree and Six Senses both offer the most seclusion within the resort, with Banyan Tree's private bay access standing out. Four Seasons is the most geographically secluded.

Is Koh Samui worth visiting — or is it too touristy?

Koh Samui has pockets of both. The luxury properties covered here — Six Senses, Four Seasons, Banyan Tree — sit well outside the more crowded tourist corridors, and each offers a genuinely immersive experience. The island rewards visitors who stay at the right property for their trip type.

How long should I stay in Koh Samui?

Most guests at the Four Seasons and Banyan Tree stay three to five nights. The Ritz-Carlton and Six Senses lend themselves to longer stays — a week or more — thanks to their depth of programming and activities. Factor in at least one day for a speedboat trip to the nearby islands.

What is there to do beyond the resort in Koh Samui?

Quite a bit. Lamai town is close to Banyan Tree and worth exploring. Speedboat day trips to the surrounding islands are a highlight — I built them into my own Four Seasons itinerary. The island also has strong culinary options, night markets, and local temples worth a half-day.

What's the best time of year to visit Koh Samui?

The Gulf of Thailand coast — where all four of these properties sit — is generally best from December through April, when skies are clearest and the water is at its calmest. The island has a distinct wet season (October through December) that can bring heavy rain, so timing matters.

Do I need to book through a travel advisor, or can I book direct?

You can book direct — but you'll likely leave value on the table. Booking through an advisor gets you profiled reservations (the hotel knows who you are before you arrive), access to rates and inventory that don't appear on public booking sites, and complimentary concierge support throughout the planning process.
