Virgin Voyages: Myths, Reality, and Why I Booked a Second Cruise Before the First One Ended
Virgin Voyages has reimagined affordable luxury adults-only cruising—but do the myths hold up? After sailing on the brand-new Brilliant Lady, I was shocked by the separation between social media fiction and onboard reality.
August 18, 2026
Virgin Voyages is the cool kid on the block. Maybe your algorithm served up a wild TikTok of the adults-only cruise line or you've heard the popular rumor that it's "basically a nonstop party at sea." I get it — I almost let those same misconceptions talk me out of sailing. Instead, I decided to find out for myself by boarding VV's brand-new ship Brilliant Lady, which launched in September 2025. And here's what happened: I loved it so much, I booked a second cruise on the same ship before we'd finished the first one.
Let me walk you through what I expected versus what I actually found — because the gap between social media fiction and onboard reality is wider than the Atlantic.
What Social Media Says vs. My Experience
You've probably seen the myths floating around online. Virgin Voyages is only for older people. It's for swingers. It's too wild. I'll be honest — these almost kept me away.
The reality couldn't be more different. On my sailing, which fell during the holiday season, I saw a wide range of ages and travelers: multigenerational families with adult kids (18–25), newlyweds, empty nesters, and seniors. Virgin Voyages attracts people from all demographic groups, and one thing stood out immediately: everyone was accepted exactly as they were.
Yes, the vibe is fun and high-energy, but it's never chaotic or out of control. The Happenings Cast makes sure there's always something going on, and if you'd rather opt out, there are plenty of quiet corners to settle in with a book or a new friend. One thing I didn't see was drunken escapades, which may be because Virgin doesn't offer an unlimited drink package. Its Bar Tab system keeps things lively without tipping into excess. The result? A social atmosphere that still feels relaxed and intentional — and honestly, a little refreshing.
The Ship: An Adults-Only Boutique Hotel That Happens to Float
Brilliant Lady hosts about 2,770 passengers across 17 decks, but this mid-sized vessel swaps traditional cruise formality for a boutique hotel atmosphere. There are open spaces everywhere — places where you can curl up with a good book or strike up a conversation with fellow sailors.
One of the most popular gathering spots is The Social. Many of the ship's events happen here — trivia, puzzle challenges, and even a dating show. There's also plenty of games and puzzles scattered across the many tables, which means you're never more than a few steps from something fun or someone new.
The staterooms carry that same design philosophy. Mine was open, modern, and thoughtfully laid out. Instead of a bulky desk eating up floor space, there was an elegantly curved desk that let you move freely through the room. When the beds are in the twin configuration, one swings around to form an L-shape, which opens up the space dramatically. If you're looking for a larger bathroom and shower, opt for the XL Balcony room.
And then there's the balcony and iconic red hammock. Grab the red throw blanket from the bed, settle into that hammock, and you can laze away hours watching the ocean roll by.
If you really want to elevate the experience, though, I recommend the RockStar Suites. Designed by ex-rockstar and renowned designer Tom Dixon, these aren't just upgraded cabins — they're a different way to sail. RockStar guests get priority boarding, a fully stocked in-room bar with complimentary initial selections, and a dedicated 24/7 RockStar Agent for personalized service throughout the voyage. The suites themselves feature marble bathrooms, spacious balconies, and terrace hammocks — a step up from the iconic red hammock I mentioned earlier.
The real gem, though, is Richard's Rooftop. This private outdoor lounge on the top deck is reserved exclusively for RockStar and Mega RockStar sailors, and it is stunning. Panoramic ocean views, daybeds, hot tubs, shaded seating, and complimentary beverages during daily happy hour — it's the kind of place where you settle in to watch a sailaway and suddenly realize an hour has passed. For travelers who want the Virgin Voyages vibe with a truly VIP layer on top, the RockStar experience is worth every penny.
What Makes Virgin Voyages Different?
Virgin Voyages ruffled some feathers in the cruise industry by flipping the traditional cruise format on its head.
No Cruise Director
Instead of a traditional cruise director, each Virgin cruise has the Happenings Cast — a 12-person entertainment crew that brings the ship to life. Each cast member has a specialty: The Hype (energy and games), The Balancer (wellness), The Artist (creativity), The Charmer (magic). They host immersive events, pop-up activities, and themed parties like Scarlet Night — Virgin Voyages' signature event featuring all-red dress codes, live DJs, and after-dark spectacles — plus countless interactive moments that feel organic rather than scripted.
No Buffet, No Main Dining Room
Instead, Virgin offers multiple restaurants with distinct culinary styles and cuisines — all included, no specialty dining surcharges. Everything is cooked to order, not sitting under a heat lamp. You eat when and where you want, without fixed dining times.
No Chair Hoarding
You don't need to wake up at dawn to reserve them. In fact, you can't. If you leave your things unattended for 45 minutes, they'll be removed to free the chairs up for others. Because people know this, they don't hoard chairs — and voilà, there are places for everyone. It's such a simple policy, and it changes the entire pool deck dynamic.
No Overhead Announcements
There's no blaring PA system interrupting your pool time. Everything from events to notifications runs through the Virgin app. As a former nurse who spent decades listening to overhead pages, I cannot tell you how much I appreciated this.
Spontaneous and Secret Events
Some of the best moments happen unexpectedly — flash performances, pop-up parties, and even secret events you may get invited to if you're in the right place at the right time.
Plus, they have an incredible gym space and a shake-for-champagne button on their app that sends you a bottle of bubbly with a shake of your wrist. If you're looking to dabble in extravagance, this might just be your place.
Let's Talk About the Food: Dining on Virgin Voyages
There are five specialty dining venues for dinner — all included — but do make reservations — which, as your travel agent, I can arrange for you. Beyond those, there are smaller eateries for breakfast and lunch serving noodle bowls, paninis, bento boxes, burgers, pizza and so much more. The pizza, by the way, is amazing. After a show or between activities, that pizza spot is always hopping.
The Test Kitchen gets mixed reviews — and I'll say upfront: if you're a picky eater, the food itself might not be your thing. But you should go for the experience alone. There's a set menu each night, and they typically offer two to three different menus per voyage. On our second cruise, we changed our reservations to make sure we tried all three.
The presentation is stunning — and often surprising. One plate looked like half an ear of corn on the cob but was actually a corn truffle meant to be spread on fresh bread. My advice? Try the Test Kitchen at least once, and just plan on having pizza afterward if you're still hungry. No judgment.
And don't skip Pink Agave either; the steak and homemade guacamole are outstanding. Whether you're craving comfort food or something adventurous, the options are impressive and thoughtfully executed across every restaurant.
My Virgin Voyages Review: The Overall Experience and Value
What surprised me most was how social the ship felt. Sailors were genuinely open to connecting — chatting with strangers at dinner, striking up conversations on the pool deck, bonding over a show. There was a warmth on board that I didn't expect, and it made the experience feel personal in a way that larger, more traditional cruise ships sometimes don't.
The Happenings Cast truly elevated every moment. The sheer number, variety, and vibe of events made every day feel fresh and exciting. And because the itineraries aren't endlessly repeated like on other cruise lines, you can take back-to-back cruises — or sail the same ship a month apart, like I did — and explore entirely different ports each time.
Oh, and did I mention? This is a fully adults-only cruise line (18+) — no exceptions.
At first glance, Virgin Voyages rates sit slightly above their competitors at about $600 to $2,000+ per person for a 4–5 day Caribbean sailing. But when you look at what's included in the fare, the value becomes clear quickly. Dining at all restaurants, water, soda, group fitness classes, Wi-Fi, and all the entertainment — included.
Instead of drink packages, Virgin uses the Bar Tab system: you prepay a tab and score a bonus tab with each one to stretch your bar budget. The prices are reasonable, too — typical ranges are $7–9 for beer, $10–13 for standard cocktails, and many wines by the glass for $11 or less.
Is Virgin Voyages Right for You?
This is the question I love most as a travel advisor, because the answer isn't the same for everyone. As someone who has sailed multiple cruise lines and written this Virgin Voyages review from firsthand experience, here's my honest take.
Virgin Voyages is a fantastic fit for people who don't think they'll like cruising — or who haven't liked cruising in the past but want to see multiple ports in one trip. It really feels like a all-inclusive resort that happens to float from port to port while you're sleeping. They've removed the things that are genuinely annoying about traditional cruises and replaced them with fresh, spontaneous experiences. The Virgin Voyages inclusions also represent extraordinary value among affordable luxury cruise lines; quality and experience will be upscale, but won't break the bank.
Who might I gently steer toward a different ship? If you want to be deeply immersed in the culture or history of the region you're sailing — if the destination experience matters more than the onboard experience — there are other cruise lines that focus on that, and I'd love to match you to one. If you're looking for a truly luxurious, personalized sailing, I have other recommendations as well.
The best way to choose the right cruise line isn't by scrolling social media. It's by working with someone who understands the nuances between brands and knows how to match you to the experience you'll actually love.
That's where I come in. If you're curious whether Virgin Voyages — or another cruise line — is right for you, let's connect. As an advisor with LuxRally Travel, I book cruises and hotels and can often secure additional onboard credits, dining reservations, or private experiences for your entire trip. I also help coordinate pre- and post-cruise arrangements as needed, so there's no added stress on your end.
Because the right cruise isn't about what's trending — it's about what's right for you. Let's find your perfect match.
