At 250 years young, Washington DC—America's capital city—is having a moment.
Special, seasonal, and annual gatherings and celebrations draw more than 25 million visitors to town, a number that rivals even New York. Highlights of the District of Columbia include the free Smithsonian Museums and 24-hour memorials, specialized collections, and top-notch entertainment and arts calendars.
Truth be told, a visit to DC is always in style.
From school trips to family vacations, couples' getaways to solo adventure, DC is a winning destination no matter how you vote.
DC is an easy city to navigate thanks to its grid design in quadrants. 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW is very different from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE. So, when getting around the District, keep in mind your quadrant.
As a LuxRally Travel advisor and former resident of Capitol Hill, I highlight in this article the best hotels within three top neighborhoods to inspire an exceptional and memorable stay. All offer Michelin-approved restaurants, fantastic events, and plenty of scenic views to make the most of your stay.
No matter what brings you to DC, here are my favorite strategic stays for you and your peeps.
Downtown Washington DC: The Best Hotels for American History Lovers
No visit to Washington DC is complete without seeing the White House or the National Mall. With the proximity of a stay Downtown, you can easily enjoy a stroll in Lafayette Park or even catch the faint sound of the blades of Marine One, the President's helicopter, over Capitol Hill.
It's appropriate to begin with the "residence of presidents," The Willard InterContinental Washington DC, which has hosted nearly every president since the 1850s.
In fact, the term 'lobbyists' was coined here from President Ulysses S. Grant's practice of holding court in the hotel lobby for those seeking favors.
The Willard is famous for its historic Round Robin Bar, its Afternoon Tea in Peacock Alley, and its designation as a historic landmark. Please note, the Willard rooftop is for the office tower only. Rooms range from 300 to 2,300 sqft with a variety of classic rooms and 69 unique suites.
Situated just two blocks from the National Mall, this is a perfect property in the District for a stay dripping with American history. A favorite tour of mine that can be booked privately ends at the Willard, led by an actor from Ford's Theater, who, in full character as Detective McDevitt, takes you through the events of Lincoln's assassination on a lively walking tour. Unforgettable, I tell you.
North of the White House, you'll find the St. Regis and The Hay-Adams, both elegant and excellent properties. The St. Regis offers rich décor and bespoke amenities and often hosts Hollywood icons and famous international guests. The Hay-Adams offers unparalleled views of the area and is a coveted wedding reception booking.
As its name suggests, Off the Record, the upscale hotel bar, located in the basement of the Hay-Adams, is known as "the place to be seen and not heard." It's a popular spot for politicians, journalists, and even tourists. If you decide to visit, definitely peep the cartoon art and caricatures of political figures.
The Wharf: Luxurious Waterfront Stays
If a concert or sporting event brings you to the District of Columbia, the Wharf in Southwest is likely the best place for your stay. At under 10 years old and newly developed, it still feels fresh; the restaurant and entertainment offerings are as refreshing as the Potomac River views just beyond.
Walkable venues include Pearl Street Warehouse for a comedy show, The Anthem for concerts, and Arena Stage, an extraordinary theater space. Nationals Ballpark for baseball, Audi Field for soccer, and Capital One Arena for hockey or basketball are all within easy reach — less than 2 miles away. All venues are easily reached on foot, by car, scooter, or bicycle — the latter two easily rentable via app.
Don't have tickets yet? Our complimentary Concierge team is the solution you need. Their access extends well beyond Washington.
The standout hotels in this area are The Pendry Washington DC, centrally located in The Wharf, and the Salamander, just a few blocks away and off the beaten path. The Pendry's stylish design, elegant atmosphere and upscale amenities make it the top choice for its prime location. Salamander DC serves as an oasis of luxury on the edge of a peninsula bordered by a concrete jungle of government buildings. The upscale dining, hotel event offerings and outdoor space give reason to spend more time on property. Bonus views include the Tidal Basin and Jefferson Memorial, which are especially breathtaking during cherry blossom season.
Peeps to look out for if you're staying along the Wharf: the night after a show, in the early morning among the joggers, walkers and early commuters, you'll catch roadies, backup performers and maybe even stars themselves having a smoke break or enjoying a quiet moment with the views.
Georgetown: Classic Architecture, Shopping, and Waterfront Retreats
M Street and Wisconsin Avenue form the bustling hub for high-end retail and dining. Take a walking tour along the cobblestone streets for an overview of historic sites and landmarks, then visit the waterfront park for a paddle rental or water taxi. There is plenty to enjoy in Georgetown beyond retail therapy.
For a tried-and-true excellent stay, the Four Seasons is on Pennsylvania Avenue, where the neighborhood begins. As DC's only 5-star, 5-diamond property offering luxurious rooms, a spa, and that signature staff service, it is in a category all its own.
Brilliantly positioned in the heart of Georgetown along the historic C&O Canal, Rosewood Washington, D.C. provides guests with premium access to the vibrant cultural epicenter of the nation's capital. Rosewood's reputation for unique, residential-style luxury is evident with 55 rooms, 12 suites and 8 townhouses. Its rooftop bar, CUT Above, is considered among the best in the city with iconic Capitol skyline views.
Café Milano is famous for hosting stars and politicians; however, if you head south down Wisconsin and pass by the private members' Executive Branch Club, you might spot someone who does not wish to be seen.
West End: Living in Washington DC like a Local
If Georgetown isn't the right fit, the next best thing is just a few blocks over in West End. It's just a stone's throw from Dupont Circle, Foggy Bottom, and Downtown. Weekdays, it's bustling with commuters, and by Friday an energetic buzz fills the air as the weekend unfolds with local activity and leisurely strolls around Rock Creek Park, just a few blocks away.
The Ritz-Carlton is often the host hotel for visiting sports teams and boasts one of the hardest-working sales teams I've encountered, attracting dozens of VIP groups and offering a satellite check-in experience. Notable guests I've personally observed include prominent figures during the White House Correspondents' Weekend, various private concert entourages, and groups of partners and families of players welcomed with champagne from top football clubs.
Another hidden gem in the West End is The Fairmont Georgetown. It stands out with spacious rooms, quiet and sophisticated shared spaces, and a number of elevated amenities. The lobby is beautiful and made all the more special with live music to welcome you.
Final Tips and Tricks for Visiting Washington DC
The District of Columbia is an all-weather city, so it's always in season. You'll find that the same ice skating spots in the winter become water splash parks in the summer, meaning there is always something to do in Washington, DC.
If museums and memorials are on the agenda, I recommend visiting the museums during the day and saving the memorials for when the sun sets. This is perfect for an evening stroll past the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the World War II Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and Korean War Veterans Memorial.
When you're on the Constitution Avenue side, be sure to peep the Albert Einstein sculpture. Keep walking across the south side of the Tidal Basin, and you'll find a trio of leaders who shaped and influenced America profoundly. I am, of course, referring to the memorials for Martin Luther King Jr., Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Thomas Jefferson. All are open 24 hours a day and beautifully illuminated at night.
