Exploring Europe with Kids Doesn't Have to Be Difficult

From gliding past castles on the Danube to watching your 9-year-old order gelato in Italian, Europe with kids is more doable than you think. Cruises, guided tours, and smart home-basing can eliminate the stress — and turn your daydream into a trip your family talks about for years.

Have you ever daydreamed of showing your kids the wonders of Europe but worried it will just be too hard? Exploring Europe with kids can be both enjoyable and manageable, especially when you choose a family-friendly cruise, opt for a guided group tour, or keep things simple with two home-base cities. These travel options take the stress out of logistics, allowing your family to soak up every moment of the unique European experience.

Like any other parent, I strive for all my family trips to be seamless, stress-free and memorable. And while it took some trial and error during the first few years as a parent, just as with anything in life, with practice comes improvement — and I quickly learned how to create an itinerary that eliminated potential stressors. In fact, I made it my career. Now, every time I reflect after each landing back home, I am not tired and in need of recovering after a big trip. Now I think, Wow, that went well! and I immediately start planning the next one.

Take it from me, a mom and travel advisor: there's nothing better than watching your kids' faces light up as your ship docks or your plane lands in a foreign destination. With options like family-focused ocean or river cruises and small group tour companies, your daydream can quickly become a real European family vacation.

Easy Europe with Kids Option #1: Family-Friendly Cruises in the Mediterranean and Beyond

Cruising is one of the easiest ways for families to experience Europe. You unpack once and visit multiple destinations, often across several countries, without the hassle of hotel changes. Family-friendly cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Celebrity Cruises offer itineraries through the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and the British Isles. Itineraries range in length, making it easy to find a sailing that will work with school breaks and busy schedules. Best of all, you won't have to worry about putting together a plan for your family, as you can book excursions through the cruise lines, which offer a wide variety of options to fit your family's interests and adventure level at every port you visit.

Cruises don't just sail the seas. For families looking for a more intimate, cultural experience, river cruises are another approach to a memorable European adventure. Lines such as AmaWaterways, Tauck, and Disney River Cruises offer family-focused itineraries along the Danube, Rhine, and Seine rivers that keep every member delighted and engaged. Whether it's exploring medieval castles, tasting foods from different cultures, participating in local activities, or simply enjoying a guided walking tour, European river cruises are an effortless and unique way to see Europe with your kids.

With so many cruise lines, where do you start?

Given that all moms and dads know that a busy and happy child means a relaxed and happy parent, my most requested cruise line is Royal Caribbean. With splash parks and waterslides, ice skating rinks, bumper cars, zip lines, laser tag, and an endless list of adult entertainment, Royal Caribbean provides a balanced environment that really captures what child- and parent-friendly truly means. Royal Caribbean also offers a family-friendly price point, especially with its popular "kids sail free" promotion, where kids 12 and under sail with no cruise fare when sharing a stateroom with two full-fare-paying adults. Royal Caribbean also has frequent BOGO deals, often structured as "Buy One Guest, Get One 50% Off," so if you're a family of four, you're really only paying full price for one adult.

When booking with me, my clients receive a $50 onboard credit (OBC) per cabin. The best illustration of a real-world use of this $50 is a text I received from one of my clients: "$50!? That covers 5 hours of Royal's Adventure Ocean Babies Club! My husband and I can have a parents-only evening!" This is true — parents can use it as an opportunity for a well-deserved date night, spa treatment, or excursion that they might not have otherwise spent the money on.

Easy Europe with Kids Option #2: Guided Group Tours

For families who prefer to stay on land while still leaving every detail in expert hands, a guided group tour is the ultimate way to experience European travel. Here's what that actually looks like in practice: companies like Kensington Tours, G Adventures, Intrepid, Backroads, and CIE Tours all offer options designed specifically for families and are led by dedicated guides who handle everything, from luggage and transportation to hotels and meals to behind-the-scenes kid-friendly experiences.

Imagine making your own chocolate in Switzerland, riding bikes through Tuscany, skipping lines at the Eiffel Tower, or tasting homemade gelato in a hole-in-the-wall Italian pastry shop. Guided group tours, each with a variety of destinations to choose from, create a seamless, effortless and unforgettable European adventure for kids and adults alike.

While there are no rules to dictate which destinations should be explored with a group tour, Iceland, the Galapagos Islands, and Italy (Tuscany/Dolomites) are premier destinations for this approach to travel, each offering a mix of adventure, shared logistics, and scenic beauty. Other top choices include Egypt and Peru for history, and Morocco for culture and culinary delights.

As the mother of an active family, I often work with preferred tour groups that organize family-friendly adventures we all enjoy. I've built itineraries with tour groups like **Backroads**, which offers three distinct trip types featuring elegant hotels and world-class dining, to suit every age and cater to a range of interests. A few favorite adventures include Iceland's Glaciers & Coast Family Multi-Adventure Tour, Dolomites Family Multi-Adventure Tour, and Galápagos & Andes Family Multi-Adventure Tour. Each has clear age and skill level recommendations, as well as a range of prices starting from $4,500 a person for a 6+ night tour.

Every family is different, and that's my favorite part of this job: helping families plan journeys and adventures that will resonate with them the most.

My Best Piece of Planning Advice: One or Two Home Bases, Not Three!

If you've read my article, “The Easy, Empowering Approach to Traveling Internationally with Kids,” I advise selecting no more than two central locations for your international adventure. By sticking with a maximum of two home bases, you immediately eliminate a handful of potential stressors. With each base comes the check-in/check-out process, unpacking and repacking, and of course, the transfers.

You can eliminate an entire round of that stress and still have an incredibly well-rounded and adventurous trip without a third destination. If you are the type of traveler who gravitates toward land and hotels without a group (meaning: not a cruise or small-group tour), I encourage you to take a few minutes to read my above-mentioned article. Or simply contact me directly after this article and I can answer any questions you have.

Castiglion del Bosco, a Rosewood HotelThe right properties give your kids room to safely explore the centuries of history that Europe has to offer.

So whether you're cruising on the Mediterranean, sailing down the Seine, or joining a guided group adventure through the Swiss Alps, Europe with the kids does not need to be a daydream. One of my favorite client stories came from a family of five who had never left the U.S. — and by the end of the trip, their 9-year-old was ordering gelato in Italian (with pleases and thank-yous, too). With family-focused itineraries and stress-free logistics, these travel styles transform the idea of a European vacation into a reality your family will talk about for years.
