Gifting Travel: Why a Trip Might Be the Best Gift You Ever Give
Forget over-hyped toys—gift memories that last a lifetime. From snorkeling Mexico's coast to rafting the Colorado River, travel gifts spark joy twice: at unwrapping & on arrival.
April 17, 2026
Looking for the perfect gift for your loved ones? I used to spend holidays and birthdays tracking down the exact toys and gadgets my kids wanted, only to find them broken in the backyard or forgotten in a closet three months later.
After their childhood celebrations had passed, my well of toy-related gift ideas ran dry. My kids had everything they wanted and needed. When my kids couldn't remember what they'd received for Christmas just a few months after, I decided I was done spending money on things for my kids to forget. Instead, I'd start gifting them new memories: travel experiences.
Here's what I discovered: the best part of giving the gift of travel is that it delivers joy twice. They're thrilled the moment they open it, but the excitement doesn't end after the gift box is tossed. Your loved one gets to plan, anticipate, and prepare for a personal getaway knowing it's already taken care of. Anticipation itself becomes a gift — weeks of daydreaming about using the new swimsuit in the Caribbean's turquoise waters or wondering whether to ski or snowboard when they head to Vail next winter. Now that travel lover's January birthday, long eclipsed by Christmas, can be celebrated again in July.
Wrapping a Memory: How to Gift an Experience
The hardest part of this gift-switch was figuring out how to wrap it. I didn't want my kids to unwrap stacks of gift cards or unfold an enveloped gift certificate — I wanted wrapped gift boxes with bows on top. I wanted these to be just as fun as the toys they received when they were younger. So, I looked at what we liked to do together as a family, what we used, and started pondering how we could level that up.
Want to gift your kids a winter mountain escape and still have them open something? You can wrap up new hiking boots and the proper attire for the hiking destination, and put pictures of the cottages or rocky trails with each gift inside. My partner and I have gifted water shoes and snorkel gear for our kids' first cruise to Mexico, new ski gear and jackets for outdoor winter experiences, and proper clothes and protection for white water rafting down the Colorado River — just to name a few.
Think of sundresses and button-ups for a summer trip to Rome or Milan; proper attire for your loved one's first safari; a winter coat for your summer baby's trip to the snow. When you're considering the whole world as a gift, the options, with a little creativity, are truly endless.
I can say this without a shred of hesitation: making this switch to gifting travel has been one of the best decisions we have ever made.
Tailoring the Perfect Travel Gift
Obviously, there is tremendous risk in planning a vacation for someone else. I get it (that's my job). You can stick with gift cards or travel gift certificates that direct their own spending, or take a leap and gift your retiring father his fully planned group tour dream trip from his high school days (hopefully that's still top of his list).
Or you can work with a travel advisor like me to create a gift that is as unique as the loved one you are celebrating.
Choosing the Right Destination
As a mother myself, I beg you — don't ask your favorite AI assistant where to send your parents for their 50th anniversary.
My process starts with the individual: you, and the people you are gifting to. When you let a real person get to know you and the intent behind the gift, we can find the perfect destination for who they are today.
When you give the gift of travel, the world is your oyster. As a travel advisor, I can help narrow down endless holiday gift ideas — from family travel getaways to solo adventures — to find the perfect fit.
But What About the Money?
Travel, unfortunately, often costs money, but now you're gifting it in a much more meaningful way. Whether you wrap a physical gift, write a heartfelt note in a gift voucher, or commit with gifted plane tickets — my job is to convert every dollar you want to spend into an unforgettable travel experience.
I take pride in maximizing client budgets to extract the most value from what they have budgeted for their trip; it's like a puzzle, with the most inspiring, wonderful picture at the end.
I work with full transparency and no fees — and genuinely enjoy finding ways to save my clients money or maximize benefits and perks of the money they are spending. My paycheck comes from the industry itself, never from my clients.

Common Concerns
What if they don't like it?
That's what a travel advisor is for. I can help them craft and perfect an itinerary and stay that they know they'll love. And you get the credit, as gift-giver!
How do we even plan it?
The best place to start planning the gift of travel is with an honest budget. From there, I can help maximize it to fit the experience you or your loved one is dreaming of. As a licensed travel advisor, I can handle all the minutia of the gift, ensure the actual experience is executed the way it was dreamed of.
What if we need help?
I'm with you throughout the journey, too. If the travel lover you're celebrating has questions or needs help before, during, or after the journey, I'll be there personally to assist. No call centers, no waiting on hold with airlines, no booking sites or cross-shopping.
