Mandarin Oriental Hotels, an emblem of luxury hospitality, has enjoyed over 50 years of prominence in the industry. Its journey began with the launch of its first property, The Mandarin, in Hong Kong in 1963. The hotel quickly gained fame for its excellent service and stood as the tallest building on the island at the time of its opening, achieving the status of a historic landmark.
In 1974, the group partially acquired The Oriental in Bangkok, already a legendary name in the hospitality world. This acquisition marked the birth of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, merging the names of these two iconic properties under the well-known fan logo.
Over the next two decades, the group expanded across Asia, opening more Mandarin Oriental Hotels. These establishments were celebrated for their luxurious accommodations, exceptional facilities, and some of the most exquisite restaurants and bars in the region.
The group ventured beyond Asia to make its mark globally. In 1987, it launched its first US property in San Francisco, later acquiring the London flagship in the mid-1990s. The year 2000 saw further expansion with the acquisition of the prestigious Rafael Group of hotels, enhancing the group's portfolio from 14 to 20 unique properties across three continents.
Today, Mandarin Oriental boasts an extensive collection of holistic spas that effortlessly blend Asian and Western treatment techniques. With 13 Forbes “Five-Star” spas, the group holds more such ratings than any other hotel brand worldwide.
In 2003, the iconic Mandarin Oriental, New York, opened its doors, followed by the Washington D.C. property in 2004. The group continued to expand in Hong Kong, opening a second luxury hotel, The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, in 2005. This modern property, featuring spacious facilities and flawless service, became an instant success.
Mandarin Oriental's growth was not limited to accommodations alone. The group also started developing its expertise in creating superb in-house restaurants and bars, boasting 27 Michelin stars in 17 restaurants across its 33 hotels worldwide.
Between 2006 and 2010, the group extended its presence to Prague, Boston, Macau, and Barcelona. It also undertook a comprehensive renovation of its Hong Kong flagship. In 2011, it made a grand entry into the Paris market, followed by the launch of two hotels in Guangzhou and Shanghai in 2013.
From 2014 to 2019, new luxury landmarks were established in Taipei, Bodrum, Milan, Marrakech, Dubai, Doha, and Beijing, among others. Furthermore, the group announced several new projects, including residential properties in New York, Istanbul, Dallas, Tel Aviv, Nanjing, Lake Lucerne, and the management takeover of the iconic Emirates Palace Abu Dhabi in 2020.
